The Exaltation of the Holy Cross,  Thursday, 14th September,2017  (Jn 3:13-17))

Dear Friend in the Lord,

Unconditional Love: We have experienced deep human love; the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of Christ is the gift of God’s unconditional Love for all humankind.  Such divine Love is beyond human comprehension.  As such, we tend to take Jesus’ Divine Sacrifice and Sufferings for granted.  Pray for the wisdom of gratitude to Jesus.

Fr Philip Heng, S.J

Jesus said to Nicodemus: ‘No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man; as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

‘For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

‘For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks to Nicodemus of a new birth in the Spirit. This “new spiritual birth” essentially includes the cross and the resurrection as explained in the analogy of Moses and the Son being “lifted up.”

  • God shows His love for us by giving us the best He has to offer – His only Son, Jesus, to atone for our sins and the sins of the world.

  • Do we thirst for the new life in the Spirit? Ask Jesus to fill us with His Spirit so that through Jesus, we might all be saved and enter His Eternal Kingdom.
