Dear Friend in the Lord,

Divine and Human Relationships: In today’s Gospel scene of the foot of the Cross of Jesus is Mary His Mother and John His beloved disciple.  The intimacy between Jesus, the Son of God, dying on the Cross for the Salvation of mankind in the presence of His Mother and closest disciple is deeply profound.  Ponder and pray on this scene today.

Fr Philip Heng, S.J

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’  Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus says to His beloved disciple, ‘This is your mother’. Jesus didn't entrust His dear mother to just anybody, but to a faithful disciple whom He really loved. ‘And from that hour the disciple took her into his home’.

  • As disciples of Jesus, we too have Mary as our mother.  Mothers are to be loved and honoured for all that they have done for us. How do we relate to Mary in the living of our faith?

  • Let us especially thank the Lord for the gift of His own Mother to us.  May we, like the beloved disciple, joyfully welcome Mary into our hearts and homes?
