Ord. Wk 32nd: Thursday,  Thursday, 16th November,2017  (Lk 17: 20-25)

Dear Friend in the Lord,

Coming of God’s Kingdom: In today’s Gospel, Jesus cautioned the Pharisees about the “Coming of the Kingdom of God” because they do not pay heed to such reality.  Likewise, do we ponder on the reality of the “shortness” of our lives on earth?  Or do we deceive ourselves into thinking that “our death will not happen so soon?”

Fr Philip Heng, S.J

Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was to come, Jesus gave them this answer, 'The coming of the kingdom of God does not admit of observation and there will be no one to say, “Look, it is here! Look, it is there!” For look, the kingdom of God is among you.’

He said to the disciples, ‘A time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of man and will not see it. They will say to you, “Look, it is there!” or, “Look, it is here!” Make no move; do not set off in pursuit; for as the lightning flashing from one part of heaven lights up the other, so will be the Son of man when his Day comes. But first he is destined to suffer grievously and be rejected by this generation.’

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • When Jesus said ‘the kingdom of God is among you’, He meant that the kingdom of God is present in and through Him.

  • Jesus wanted to teach the Pharisees about the nature of its coming when they were concerned about the timing of its coming.

  • The kingdom of God will be revealed fully in God’s eternal glory in heaven. Until then, Our Lord expects us to be aware of its presence and to prepare ourselves to be more worthy of living in His glory when the time comes.
