Dear Friend in the Lord,

Divine Power:  In today’s Gospel, Jesus expelled the demons, with divine authority in His Words.  When we pray with an open heart, the Holy Spirit will be able to empower us with God’s strength to overcome pains and trials in our life.  But, when we choose to do our ‘own will,’ the tendency is to be selfish and cause pain and division to others.

Fr Philip Heng, S.J

On the Sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority.

In their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked it saying, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.

The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it all meant, saying, ‘Here is a teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’

TODAY'S POINTERS ON GOD'S WORD
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In the Gospel, Jesus taught with great authority in the synagogue; particularly so when He expelled the unclean spirits from the possessed man.

  • •The crowds were astonished with what they saw.  Jesus’ Spirit continues to “work miracles” in our lives too, but are we in touched with the Spirit’s workings within us?

  • •Are there any obstacles that are preventing you from sensing the promptings of the Spirit within you?  Speak to Jesus about your need to be more in tune with His Spirit.
