Daily Word Of God

Luke 14:1-6

On a Sabbath day Jesus had gone to share a meal in the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. Now there in front of him was a man with dropsy, and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees with the words, ‘Is it against the law to cure someone on the Sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away.

Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day without any hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus challenges the Pharisees by contrasting how their disproportionately rigid ways of following the Jewish Laws of the Sabbath is totally inconsistent with curing of a sick person as prohibited “work” on the Sabbath.

  • Jesus points out how their ridiculously inconsistent practice of their Sabbath Laws were preventing God’s love, mercy and compassion to be shown.

  • Are there times when we too can be ridiculously uncompromising when we should be doing the greater good for someoneg. forgiveness to bring greater          unity within a family etc.?
