Daily Word Of God

Luke 17:7-10

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, “Come and have your meal at once”? Would he not be more likely to say, “Get my supper ready; fasten your belt and wait on me while I eat and drink. You yourself can eat and drink afterwards”? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told?

So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are useless servants: we have done no more than our duty.”

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Just as Jesus came “not to be served, but to serve” (Matt 20:28), we too must regard ourselves as God’s servants. Service of God and of neighbour is both a voluntary act and a sacred duty.

  • Our self-giving service pleases God especially when it is done out of love for Him. True love is sacrificial, generous, and selfless. God’s love compels us to give Him our best!

  • Will you give yourself in loving service for others generously, just as Christ had generously offered His life for you?
