Daily Word Of God

Luke 14:1-6

Now on a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. There in front of him was a man with dropsy, and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees. ‘Is it against the law’ he asked ‘to cure a man on the sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away.

Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a sabbath day without hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus tries to teach the Pharisees the need to have a good sense of proportion and priorities in the practice of their obedience to God’s commandments.

  • However, they were so blind and rigid in their ways that they could not see how a person’s compassionate needs are consistent to the fulfilling of the Sabbath Laws.

  • Are we guilty of failing to do goodg. show compassion to the poor and needy of our family and society, and yet so particular in observing the small details of the practices of our faith?
