Daily Word Of God

Matthew 8:5-10

When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him.  ‘Sir,’ he said, ‘my servant is lying at home paralysed and in great pain.’ Jesus said to him, ‘I will come myself and cure him.’

The centurion replied, ‘Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, “Go,” and he goes; to another, “Come here,” and he comes; to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.’

When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, ‘In truth I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found faith as great as this.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • The Roman Centurion was not a Jew, yet he recognized the divine power of Jesus. He believed that Jesus has authority over everything in this world including one’s life.

  • As Baptised Christians, how much and how deep is our faith in Jesus who can provide for our needs in life? Do we surrender everything to God: our lives and all that are precious to us e.g. family, wealth, health etc.

  • God is the author and the authority of our lives and all that exist. How often do we find ourselves really trusting God fully or do we still want to have control over our lives?
