Daily Word Of God
Mark 9:30-35
Jesus and his disciples made their way through Galilee; and he did not want anyone to know, because he was instructing his disciples; he was telling them, ‘The Son of man will be delivered into the power of men; they will put him to death; and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him.
They came to Capernaum, and when he got into the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ They said nothing, because on the road they had been arguing which of them was the greatest. So he sat down, called the Twelve to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all.’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- Our Holy Father, the late great Pope John Paul II, called himself the servant of the servants of God. In doing so, he was emphasising and putting into practice what Jesus said in today’s Gospel.
- In asking His disciples to welcome little children (who had no legal rights), Jesus was asking them (and us) to reach out to the “little ones” and the poor of our society. Jesus’ compassion for the oppressed and voiceless must also be part of our daily living as we are His disciples.
- Who are the “little children” in your life? How is Our Lord challenging you to have a deeper commitment to them?
