Lord, in living our lives, help us to gather and not scatter

16th Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Sunday 21st July 2024

Jer 23:1-6; Ps 22:1-6; Eph 2:13-18
Mk 6:30-34 (Ps Wk IV)

Our readings today make reference to sheep and shepherds. It was a natural image for the prophets and Jesus to use in a pastoral society like Israel. In our current societies, sheep represent an image of vulnerability and defenselessness in the face of the perils which the world impinges on us. Sheep depend upon others for protection and guidance to the food and water they need in a hostile climate.  The shepherd, of course, is a symbol of a guide and protector who cares for his sheep. The shepherd risks his own life to defend his flock from various dangers and holds them safely together.  Jeremiah, however, accuses the religious and political leaders of his day of betraying their vocation and failing to tend their flock properly, allowing the sheep to be scattered and separated to different deities.

Jesus takes pity on the lost, seeking crowds. He untiringly extends care to teach and guide whoever seeks Him. Following Jesus, we are all called to task in nurturing genuine care. Certainly, we need to exercise the role of a caring shepherd in preventing differences of opinion from confusing people to worship manipulative personalities. Genuine respect is nurtured in the needy when they are recognized and given their due. At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed that we all may be one. It is our task to pray and preserve a unifying reverence to God and respect of men and women.

Dear Lord, in praying and working, let us gather and not scatter.
