Daily Word Of God

John 20:24, 25b-29

Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. Thomas answered, ‘Unless I can see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’

Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you,’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God.’

Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In the secular and scientific world, one has to see and verify before one “believes.” However, faith is a gift from God.  We are called to believe in the mysteries of God’s revelation even if we “do not see”; for example, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

  • We also called to believe and be in obedience to God’s Truth in His revealed Word and the Teachings of the Institutional Church on Dogmas, Doctrines and moral issues, e.g. abortions.

  • Do we thank God for the gift of faith or are we constantly questioning and being skeptical about what the Church teaches as Truth? If we are skeptical we will experience “unhappiness” with our daily secular living.
