Daily Word Of God
Matthew 9:14-17
John’s disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’
Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth onto an old cloak, because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, the wine runs out, and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine in fresh skins and both are preserved.’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- Jesus explains that there is a time for fasting and a time for feasting. To be His disciple is to experience a whole new joy of relationship akin to the blissful joy of a couple at their wedding feast.
- But, the Lord’s disciples had their share of pains and sufferings as well. We too will need to seek His forgiveness by fasting and repenting for our sins.
- Do you feel joyful in the Lord’s presence and express sorrow and contrition for your sins? Consider how blessed we are that Jesus has called us to know, love, and serve Him as His disciples!
