Lord, grant me strength and courage.

2nd Week of Advent : Wednesday 11th December 2019

Is. 40:25-31; Ps. 103(102):1-2,3-4,8,10;
Mt. 11:28-30 (Ps Wk II)

Sometimes groups of Christian runners wear T-shirts with Isaiah’s quotation on them. It would be great to run and never grow weary — and eagles’ wings would be a big help. We might not win races, but God gives us strength and stamina for every part of our lives.

If we try to do everything ourselves, relying only on our power, we will grow weary and eventually fail. But if we remember that it is God’s show and not ours, God will fill us with a strength that we never imagined.

‘Yoke’ can be a negative symbol — we often speak of the yoke of slavery or oppression. How can the yoke of Jesus be easy or light? Life seems very hard at times. The yoke that Jesus offers is different. It will keep us connected to him and prevent us from going astray. And since he is our ‘yokemate’, he will carry our burden when we cannot.

Again, the worst thing that we can do is try to journey through life alone and without God’s help. God is waiting to be asked.

Lord, grant me strength and courage.
