Today’s readings give us powerful messages.  Firstly, it tells of the almighty God who  is above all circumstances.  Prophet Isaiah reminded us of the protecting power of God by recalling the Crossing of the Red Sea where we see the battle between God and Pharaoh’s chariots and horsemen and God’s victory over all!  This reminds of the presence of God which is often forgotten or taken for granted.

Paul’s Letter to the Philippians called the faithful to keep their sights on what really matters, as in Paul’s encounter with the Risen Lord called for a radical reassessment of his own tradition. A new goal was set by Paul.

The same message is reiterated in the Gospel passage wherein Jesus did not condone what the woman had done as he said to her, “go now, sin no more”.

The whole scene tells us that the elders were completely wrong for such sin cannot be committed alone. “To stone the woman” is in fact a slight alteration from the Jewish law. This manner of execution was not prescribed unless the woman was a betrothed virgin (Dt.22: 23-24) and the law required execution of both parties not just the woman (Lev 20:10, Dt 22:22).  Jesus’ answer really took them by surprise!

“Lord, guide us during this Lenten season to be less judgmental in our attitude towards others and to take heed of the power of God who is always present in our life.”
