Daily Word Of God

Matthew 4:18-23

As Jesus was walking by the Lake of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Come after me and I will make you fishers of people.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him.

Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. And at once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him.

He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing all kinds of disease and illness among the people.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In searching for people who would continue His Father’s Mission of salvation, Jesus called His apostles while they were in the midst of their daily work of earning their living.

  • Likewise, Jesus is also seeking us out to serve His Father’s Mission in our own environment e.g. in our home, place of work, worship and leisure and the like.

  • The apostles responded generously to God’s call without any conditions and reservations. When Jesus calls you, would you respond as generously and as wholeheartedly? Pray for the grace to make Christ the centre of your life.
