Daily Word Of God
John 14:27-31a
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me say: I am going away and shall return. If you loved me you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
‘I have told you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe. I shall not talk to you much longer, because the prince of this world is on his way. He has no power over me, but the world must recognise that I love the Father and that I act just as the Father commanded.’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- As Jesus bids His disciples farewell, He gives them the gift of His peace; “a peace which the world cannot give” because it is a divine peace that will last for all eternity, and thus only God can give.
- But, before they experience this eternal divine peace Jesus foretells that He will have to endure His passion and death before His resurrection.
- As Jesus has to embrace much suffering in fulfilling His Father’s plan to save us, we too are called to allow the Passion, death and resurrection reality to permeate our hearts and daily living. When the Spirit is able to do this in us, we will truly experience the “divine peace” that Jesus promised us here and now.
