Daily Word Of God
Luke 14:25-28, 31, 33
Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. ‘Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, cannot be my disciple. No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be my disciple.
‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against him with twenty thousand? So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he owns.’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- In today’s gospel Jesus is talking about the sacrifices and costs of being His disciple. This primarily means that we are called to put God at the centre of our lives and not push Him to the background.
- In taking up discipleship we must thus, be more detached from the things and people of this world so that we can be more fully attached to God and His Kingdom.
- As a disciple of Jesus it is good to ask ourselves, “Am I willing to serve and glorify God through my daily living? How is God challenging me to change my lifestyle for such discipleship?”
