Matthew 1:1-2a, 6b, 11b, 16-17
Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac ….
David was the father of Solomon ….
Then the deportation to Babylon took place.
Jacob was the father Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.
The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

- It took 42 generations before the promised Messiah was born.
- Jesus’ ancestors were a motley crowd, many of whom were God-fearing individuals, but some were infamous. Yet, despite human failings, God did not allow that to destroy His plan for redemption.
