Daily Word Of God
Matthew 17:10-13
As they came down from the mountain the disciples put this question to Jesus, ‘Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’
He replied, ‘Elijah is indeed coming, and he will set everything right again; however, I tell you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him as they pleased; and the Son of man will suffer similarly at their hands.’ Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples of their need to be aware of God’s Providence and Presence through Prophet Elijah, and also through Him who is sent by the Father for the Salvation of all peoples.
- Like the Jews in Jesus’ times, we too are often not aware of God’s presence in our world and in the midst of our daily living.
- Let us pray for the grace of openness to God’s presence and the need to live a more vigilant faith that is more Christ-centred and passionate about the Good News of Salvation.
