Daily Word Of God

Matthew 2:1-3, 8-11

In the course of his preaching he said, ‘After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, and I am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.  I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John. And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, like a dove, descending on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, God the Father unveiled His divine Will when Jesus was baptised even though He did not have any sins to be cleansed.

  • Jesus’ Baptism was for Him a “moment of decision” to begin His Public ministry by emerging from His private life in Nazareth.

  • Jesus’ Baptism also marked the approval of the Father of His decision through the voice that said, “You are my Son” . . . the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to be the Good News of salvation. Ponder on your own Baptism, and reflect on how it has transformed your life over the years and even in your present life.
