Daily Word Of God
John 4:5-7, 9a, 10-12a, 13-14
Jesus came to the Samaritan town called Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Give me something to drink.’
The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, for something to drink?’ Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me something to drink,’ you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.
‘You have no bucket, sir,’ she answered, ‘and the well is deep: how do you get this living water? Are you a greater man than our father Jacob?’ Jesus replied: ‘Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again; but no one who drinks the water that I shall give will ever be thirsty again: the water that I shall give will become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- To a Jew, the Samaritan woman is not only a stranger, but also an enemy. It would be scandalous to speak to such a woman, but Jesus feels the pain in her heart and He asks her for a drink.
- Jesus reaches out to her and offers her the “Living Water” to refresh and renew herself, giving her a new zest for life.
- Jesus also feels the pain within our hearts. If we ponder on our lives, we will see that Jesus has often given us the graces for conversion from our sinfulness and continues to forgive us. Are you making use of all these blessings of God in your life?
