Daily Word Of God
John 7:40-53
Some of the crowd who had been listening said, ‘Jesus is indeed the prophet,’ and some said, ‘He is the Christ,’ but others said, ‘Would the Christ come from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, the village where David was?’
So the people could not agree about him. Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actually laid a hand on him. The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, ‘Why haven’t you brought him?’ The guards replied, ‘No one has ever spoken like this man.’
‘So,’ the Pharisees answered, ‘you, too, have been led astray?’
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- When Jesus, the Son of God, comes into the midst of the Jews, they have divided opinions about Him.
- The chief priests put up the greatest opposition to Jesus being “the Christ from Galilee.” They were not only deeply prejudiced against anyone who differed from their rigid rules and regulations, but also wanted to have power and control over the worshippers.
- We too must be wary of falling into the same trap as the chief priests. How conscious are we of our prejudices of others and our need for control over others especially those who work for us e.g. maids, poor and needy?
