Daily Word Of God
Luke 2:16-21
The shepherds hurried away to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.
As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.
When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- God always shows preferential love for the poor and oppressed. The Good News of Jesus’ birth was first manifested to shepherds. They were the poorest of the poor who had no legal rights and existence in Israel.
- Jesus, the Son of God and Messiah who came to save all humankind chose to be born in the bitter cold of the night and have an unkempt manger for a bed.
- We are each challenged to be more like Jesus – selfless, simple and spiritually focused on serving God’s Will without the trappings, pomp and prestige of the secular society.
