Daily Word Of God
Luke 2:16-21
The shepherds hurried away to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.
As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.
When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- The shepherds were the poorest of the poor. They were privileged to be the first to hear of Jesus’ birth because their humility and simplicity made them very receptive of the Messiah’s birth.
- The Messiah, the King of kings’ birth in obscurity and lowliness foreshadows a divine mystery that is incomprehensible. Indeed, His life ended in the cruel death on the Cross in order to save all humankind.
- Like Mary we too ponder on the mystery of Jesus’ coming to share our humanity. As we celebrate His first coming, tell Jesus how much we welcome Him in our hearts and home.
