Daily Word Of God

Luke 6:1-5

One sabbath Jesus happened to be taking a walk through the cornfields, and his disciples were picking ears of corn, rubbing them in their hands and eating them.  Some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are you doing something that is forbidden on the sabbath day?’

Jesus answered them, ‘So you have not read what David did when he and his followers were hungry-  how he went into the House of God and took the loaves of  offering and ate them and gave them to his followers, loaves which only the priests are allowed to eat?’

And he said to them, ‘The Son of Man is master of the sabbath.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus asserts that a human person’s basic needs take precedence over ritual custom.  Jesus cites how David and his men, in their hunger, ate the holy bread offered in the temple meant strictly for priests.

  • We must always honour God in our work and in our rest and treat our neighbour with respect and kindness without being critical or self-righteous.

  • Do you honour God in the way you treat your neighbour and observe the Sabbath?  Ask Jesus to show you how to love God and neighbour more fully each day.
