Daily Word Of God
Matthew 25:1-6, 8-9, 13
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of Heaven will be like this: Ten wedding attendants took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones, though they took their lamps, took no oil with them, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “Look! The bridegroom! Go out and meet him.”
The foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.”
So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.
Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- In today’s Gospel, when Jesus says, “Stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour,” He is urging us to remain vigilant in our faith.
- We might have many reasons for thinking that the time for Jesus’ “Second Coming”, i.e. the end of the world is still a long way off. On the contrary, Jesus cautions us that this can happen anytime. Moreover, we can also die any time.
- Ask yourself this question: ‘Am I ready for Christ’s return?’ Conclude this reflection with this prayer: “Father, give me the graces to live my faith vigilantly every day that You may be glorified at all times. Amen.”
