Daily Word Of God

Mark 5:2, 6b-10, 12-13, 16-17

When Jesus disembarked, a man with an unclean spirit at once came out from the tombs towards him and fell at his feet and shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? In God’s name do not torture me!’ For Jesus had been saying to him, ‘Come out of the man, unclean spirit.’ Then he asked, ‘What is your name?’

He answered, ‘My name is Legion, for there are many of us.’ And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the district. The unclean spirits begged him, ‘Send us to the pigs, let us go into them.’ So he gave them leave. With that, the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand pigs charged down the cliff into the lake, and there they were drowned.

And those who had witnessed it reported what had happened to the demoniac and what had become of the pigs. Then they began to implore Jesus to leave their neighbourhood.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Today’s Gospel tells us how Jesus expelled a legion of demons in a man.  This shows us that God is infinitely more powerful than any demons.  Nevertheless, we should neither tempt nor temper with them.

  • Demons can have a powerful influence and hold on our lives only if we allow them to do so.  But, if our lives are focused on living in God’s ways and are strengthened by the reception of the Sacraments, we have nothing to fear.

  • Pray for the graces we need to have the wisdom to live as God wills of us daily.
