Daily Word Of God

Matthew 16:24-28

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life? Or what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?

‘For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his behaviour. In truth I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming with his kingdom.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays down the conditions of following Him.  For some of us, Jesus’ words may sound harsh and uncompromising.

  • However, Jesus is merely reminding us to keep in perspective our real inheritance and not become enmeshed in things of this world that are passing.

  • To keep Jesus’ perspective in life, we should strive for a life of simplicity and selflessness, as Jesus has shown us. Then, our life will not be “distracted and cluttered” by the non-essentials that draw us away from His Kingdom.  Pray for strength to live in Jesus’ ways.
