22nd Week in Ordinary Time: Thursday 5th September 2019

Col. 1:9-14; Ps. 98(97):2-4,5-6; Lk. 5:1-11 (Ps Wk II)

Patient endurance is something we all need, especially in our scary and negative world. Colossians invites us to pray for the spirit of wisdom and understanding, so that we may be transformed and live joyful lives worthy of God. Those who do so will share in the inheritance that God intends for us. In comparison to this inheritance, the sufferings of this world are nothing.

Jesus seeks us out and calls us just as we are. Peter was afraid after the miraculous catch of fish. He knew Jesus was responsible, and he felt unworthy in his presence. But Jesus promised to make him a fisher of people! Jesus did not call Peter because of his holiness or perfection — the gospels are clear that he was very imperfect. He called him because he read his heart and wanted him for an apostle.

Accepting God’s call is a form of humility and gratitude. We should neither shrink back in fear or puff ourselves up with a sense of superiority. Jesus is the one in charge; Jesus makes everything possible. He will make us into who he wants us to be.

Lord, I am grateful for Your call.
