Mary chooses to trust in God. This choice brings blessings to Mary and to us

ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD (C) : Friday 25th March 2022

Is. 7:10-14; 8:10; Ps. 39:7-9,10,11;
Heb. 10:4-10; Lk. 1:26-38 (Psalter proper)

Today, we hear about the encounter between the angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. What can we say about such an extraordinary event? It is the Annunciation!

God revealed the good news to Mary. She was the first to hear and believe that God would do what He had promised. It is God who takes the initiative and sends the angel. God has a plan. God is acting: “The Lord God will give Jesus the throne of his father David…his kingdom will never end” (Lk. 1:32-33).

Mary realises God’s greatness and her fragility. She does not try to measure up to God or scrutinise the details of her role. She sees herself as God’s servant. She places herself in God’s hands and trusts deeply. Mary cooperates with God: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your Word”. (1:38).

This call meant that Jesus would be formed in her womb, and she, as His mother, would nourish and care for Him. In saying YES, – “I am the handmaid of the Lord” – Mary agreed to God’s plan because she wanted what God wanted. She was willing to accept all the joy, the pain and the unexpected events. This is not easy.

In the first reading, Israel is threatened by an attack. The prophet Isaiah tells King Ahaz to trust God rather than rely on the King of Assyria. Sadly, Ahaz chooses Assyria. As a result, northern Israel becomes part of the Assyrian Empire.

Mary chooses to trust in God. This choice brings blessings to Mary and to us.

Oh God, Your grace and Mary’s trust resulted in the birth of Jesus. Amen.
