Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so is my heart, Lord

2nd Week of Lent: Saturday, 14th March 2020

Mic. 7:14-15,18-20; Ps. 103(102):1-2,3-4,9-10,11-12;
Lk. 15:1-3,11-32 (Ps Wk II)

Sometimes the sacrament of reconciliation is misunderstood by some as an experience of being “slaughtered”. From this, it follows that the over-riding distorted image of God is that of a “punisher”. Consequently, we maintain our distance from God, perhaps even from Church — let alone the sacrament of reconciliation.

As we enter the spirit of Lent, the Church encourages us to look at this sacrament within the context of a celebration. “What is there to celebrate?” one might ask, and “Could God celebrate while my sins are as red as scarlet?”

Do you feel this way? Well, don’t be discouraged! Notice that as we apply the story of the prodigal son/daughter, to ourselves, we do not see a single trace of anger or aggression on the part of the father.  Our heavenly Father longs for our return from sinfulness — with love and in anticipation.

God awaits to celebrate His love with a liberated sinner. We will sense His love during the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation which points to a new life in Christ.

“Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so is my heart, Lord.” Yes, Lord, I yearn for the refreshing love of Your forgiveness.
