Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God.
World Day of Peace
Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God : Wednesday 1st January 2020
Num. 6:22-27; Ps. 67(66):2-3,5,6,8;
Gal. 4:4-7; Lk. 2:16-21 (Psalter proper)
In ancient Israel, the naming of a child was a sacred event. Its name had deep significance, signalling to all the unique role the child would play. The name Jesus means ‘God saves’ and who Jesus is. The shepherds recognized this and rejoiced. Mary also rejoiced, but thoughtfully pondered over what it might mean. The birth of Jesus was a continuation of the blessings of the Old Testament.
The divine blessing of Aaron reveals to us what God is like: God blesses us, keeps us, and God’s face shines on us and gives us peace. As part of the blessing we have in Christ, the Spirit dwells within us and enables us to recognize God as our loving Father. We are God’s adopted children.
We begin the New Year with that assurance and comfort. The coming year may bring us challenges and even pain at times, but we should always remember God’s love and blessings will always be with us. God will never abandon us.
Lord, may I never forget your blessings and kindness.
