21st Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Saturday 28th August 2021

Many feel that they have to shout and draw attention to themselves to proclaim the Gospel. Paul insisted that our most eloquent testimony is often quiet, unassuming, and gentle. He advised his followers to live a peaceful life of love and caring for others and avoid those activities of their culture that were displeasing to God. This is the sort of testimony that attracts lasting attention – being different in a very positive way. It does not lead to division or fanaticism and is something that any person of goodwill can follow.

We all want to grow spiritually, but fear often holds us back. The ‘wicked’ servant was afraid of losing everything in the story, so he did absolutely nothing. He was paralyzed by fear. His master was not pleased – he felt that the servant should have been willing to take some risks for the sake of a greater return. Similarly, many people are so afraid of making a mistake that they never grow spiritually. They don’t trust God – they think that God is waiting to punish them for every mistake they make. God encourages us to take risks in good faith, try new things, and stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zones. And as St Augustine says: Our hearts are restless until they can find rest in You.

Lord, free me from all fear.
