5th Week in Ordinary Time (Year A) : Friday 10th February 2023

The first reading from Genesis relates the temptation of the first couple and how they follow the serpent’s wiles instead of obeying God’s command telling them not to eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. By giving in to the serpent’s lure, their eyes are open, and they realise they are naked. To cover their nakedness, they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths. This opening of their eyes makes them ashamed of themselves instead of acknowledging their dignity as God’s highest creation.

In the second reading from the Gospel, we have the opening of the ear and the loosening of a man’s tongue. Jesus said, “Be opened” into the man’s ear. This opening of the ear cures the man of his deafness. He is now able to hear and speak as well. He is no more ashamed of his deafness and is able to mix around freely with other people.

In the first opening of the eyes, humanity falls; in the second opening of the ear by Jesus, humanity is lifted up again. Jesus, as Messiah and Saviour, makes the deaf hear, the dumb speak, the lame walk again, the blind see, etc.

In my fallen state, do I ensure Jesus lifts me up again every time I fall into sin?

Lord Jesus, I look to You to lift me up from my sins.
