  • DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY (B) : 7th April 2024

Lord, may we never cease to give thanks to You, for Your love has no end”

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY (B) : 7th April 2024

Acts 4:32-35; Ps. 118:2-4,16-18,22-24;
1 Jn. 5:1-6; Jn. 20:19-31

We have been begotten by God because we believe in Jesus. God wants more than our friendship. God declares we are His special children. Our response in faith of our “begotteness” means that loving God should translate into keeping His commandments (cf. 1 Jn 5:1-6).

The early Christians lived their “begotteness” in community life. They acknowledged one another as siblings in the Lord. This described their unity and generosity as of one heart and one mind, sharing everything they had and selling their possessions to provide for those in need. They did not forget how begotten they were (cf. Acts 4:32-35). Earlier, the psalmist declared his “begotteness” by placing trust in God, Who always remembers His begotten. God’s blessings upon the people remain – a love that has no end.

In the locked room where the fearful disciples hid and prayed, Jesus appeared to them. He greeted them “Peace be with you”. Jesus did not forsake those whom He has begotten. He looked out for Thomas who was not present eight days earlier and extended His wounded hands and side, encouraged Thomas to reconnect with Him again, and in doing so reminded Thomas of his “begotteness” (cf. John 20:19-31).

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus continues His act of receiving us into our true state of “begotteness”. This invitation is always there.

Dear Lord, may we never cease to give thanks to You, for Your love has no end”.
