The gate that leads to life is narrow and all must pass through it

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) : Tuesday 25th June 2024

2 Kgs. 19:9-11, 14-21, 31-36;
Ps. 47:2-4, 10-11;
Mt. 7:6, 12-14 (Ps Wk IV)

The Assyrians were a mighty killing machine and had crushed nearly all the kingdoms of the ancient near east. Jerusalem was next; the Assyrian king sent a threat to King Hezekiah demanding submission. It seemed hopeless, but Hezekiah begged God for divine assistance. God promised that none of the enemy troops would enter the city and He was true to His word. He struck down the Assyrian army with a plague and Jerusalem was saved. If only we had such faith in God, but we often give in to fear and doubt. God is far more powerful than any negative force on earth. We need to walk in God’s ways and rely on God for guidance and protection.

Jesus, in Matthew’s Gospel, gives us some practical advice: “do not give dogs what is holy”, it is not a good idea to share your spiritual insights or beliefs with those who are closed minded. Make sure they are ready to hear certain things. Many bitter religious quarrels could be solved by following this rule. Always follow the Golden Rule – treat others as you would want them to treat you, it is at the core of all authentic spirituality. And finally, do not try to take shortcuts in your spiritual journey – the gate that leads to life is narrow and all must pass through it. Wealth, power, physical force, or manipulation will not help you.

Lord, may I always treat others as I would want to be treated.
