St Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop, pray for us
29th Week in Ordinary Time (B) : Thursday, 24th October 2024
Eph 3:14-21; Ps 32:1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19;
Lk 12:49-53 (Ps Wk I)
Like the crowds, we hear Jesus’ teaching on endurance and courage while on the road to Jerusalem. It is a resolute and decisive journey. He prepares his followers on what is to come, knowing that not everyone will keep to their decision to follow him. Jesus calls it “a baptism of fire”. A total purification of oneself from sin. Do I find him talking to me as well about my own decisiveness in following him all the way?
The fire of testing will reveal who is on his side and who will be against him. Jesus’ message will divide the people by their choices. Or rather, the people will divide themselves as either for, or against him. This is the fire that reveals the authenticity and endurance of a person. Jesus Himself is that fire that will burn those who oppose His values. When Jesus speaks of a “baptism”, it is no longer immersion in water. It is a soaking in the bloody experience of His crucifixion. It is so dreadful that He wishes it would be over and unnecessary.
Jesus promises His disciples consolation since they will also face conflict and division. Where am I in this and, am I ready to put up with opposition from those who are close to me?
Lord Jesus, thank You for guiding me to truly see Your endurance to persecution and boldness for the truth. Whatever You want me to do, help me to firmly hold on to the truth that You are with me!
