St Patrick, Bishop, pray for us

2nd Week of Lent (C) : Monday 17th March 2025

Dan 9:4-10; Ps 78 (79):8-9, 11, 13; Lk 6:36-38 (Ps Wk II)

Popularity in giving moral opinions has become a media frenzy. Some turn to be gurus of morality of their own justice. We see many content creators putting out videos on social media, focusing on the concept of morality and karma. The few themes of these videos include not judging others by their colour or looks, not to mistreat others and to respect everyone regardless of who they are. This moral treatment is something not exclusive to Catholic morality but inherently innate in all human beings.

However, what differentiates us from the world as disciples of Jesus is that we do not adhere to the concept of retribution, which the worldly karma dictates. When we do good, it is not done out of fear of punishment or the desire for reward. Jesus tells us in the Gospel that we should be compassionate because God is compassionate.

It would be fair to say that many of us have experienced receiving back the good in non-tangible ways when we give goodness freely. When we choose to give to others, in reality we are also giving to ourselves. When we choose to withhold, we choose not to receive. Ultimately, we should be motivated by the greatest commandment given by Christ, “loving God and neighbour as we love ourselves.” If we truly love ourselves, then we will truly give the gift of ourselves freely without reservation.

D ear Lord, I thank You for You have been compassionate to me, may I never let every opportunity to be compassionate pass me by.
